“Without Me” was released by Halsey on October 4th,
2018. The song focuses on her unhealthy relationship and how she was treated poorly, despite constantly supporting her partner. The record’s tone is a mixture of heartbreak, empowerment, and anger.
Breakups foster an environment for transformation within yourself. Getting in touch with feelings, working through
the hurt and hopelessness is a lot to go through, but then emerging as a butterfly makes all the pain worth it. The design incorporates images of Halsey, butterflies, and flowers as symbolism for transformation. The layering of the imagery and playing with different textures supports the concept of being honest and emotional. The darker colors represent the sorrow that is felt after a breakup, while the lighter colors offer a sense of hope. The type used matches the branding of Halsey, and by repeating the title “Without Me” on the cover, it reinforces the repeating lyric, “thinking you can live without me.” It has a tone of sadness of her partner being without her, but also empowerment in Halsey realizing that she will be better off without them.
